Provider Attitudes and Behavior

Evidence of implicit bias may be activated under stressful working conditions. Repeated instances of certain patient situations may become engrained as “truths” about an entire population group.

  • What are 3 examples of exposure to bias among providers’ peers which may reinforce their bias, making them more likely to make treatment decisions that are based on racial/ethnic stereotypes rather than an individual patient’s medical status?
  • What interventions would you suggest for practitioners actively working with patients?
  • What interventions would you suggest to neutralize biases that have been institutionalized in health care settings?
